On Sunday, September 12, 2010, Nichols-Bethel UMC will proudly host the Christian Rock/Pop band Unsearchable Riches. They will be performing at the 9:30am and 11:00am worship services and at a 2:00pm concert to benefit the local chapter of Habitat for Humanity (A love offering will be taken for this cause). Come out and spread the Word of what God is planning to do in our community!
Piano driven pop/rock is the unique blend that Baltimore band Unsearchable Riches has created. With musical influences ranging from Ben Folds Five and Jellyfish to Michael W. Smith and Keith Green this rare concoction brings together a diverse audience of young, old and somewhere in between.
With the history of the band reaching back to 1999, the band has seen God move and lead in ways they never could have imagined. In the spring of 2002 for 12 months, CCM magazine had a spotlight article every month following the band's development deal with Forefront Records (home to dc Talk, Audio Adrenaline, Stacie Orrico and more). The band never released an album for Forefront Records and signed a "letter of intent" with Reunion Records (Michael W. Smith, Joy Williams) in March of 2003. Because of a company merge and cut-back, the band never recorded or released a record for Reunion records.
Unsearchable Riches loves to play live as much as possible and has had the pleasure of opening for groups such as Mercy Me, Audio Adrenaline, FFH, Avalon, Go Fish, ZoeGirl, among others. They have put out 3 CD's including their latest release Songs to be Sung including tracks from demos done with Forefront Records and producer John Mark Painter (Flemming and John), and other demos produced by the likes of Ian Eskelin from All Star United. Their song "Friday Night" was the ..1 requested song on Lancaster, PA's radio stating WJTL's top 5 at 5 for several weeks.
Ephesians 3:8 is the verse in the Bible from which the band's name stems; it reads, Although I am less than the least of all God's people, this grace was given to me; to preach to the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ. Even though we don't deserve it God has given us the opportunity to use our music to share with everyone we come across about His amazing love, grace, mercy, forgiveness, and salvation.
We at Nichols-Bethel UMC would like to partner with you, in nurturing your child’s faith. Some of the ways we can do that is through getting them involved in the life of the church, both on Sunday morning and beyond. Here are some possibilities, as I see them:
Come to Sunday School and experience the love of Jesus through Bible story, song and related activities.
Sing in a children’s choir, either Sunday morning (9:30 a.m.) or Thursday afternoon (5:00 p.m.)
Play choir chimes, as a forerunner to playing handbells. Choir chimes meet Thursdays at 5:45 p.m.-6:00 p.m. and Sundays at 10:15 a.m.-10:30 a.m.
Experience worship through participation in sharing song and story.
There are many teachable moments in any or all of these activities. A faith foundation is being built through these experiential activities, as well as developing a sense of Christian community, caring and living by Christian example.
Choirs begin Thursday, September 9 at 5:00 p.m. and Sunday, September 12 at 9:30 a.m.
Choir theme for 2010-11 is: Jesus Loves the Little Children, sharing stories of Jesus’ ministry.
Sunday School is year round at 9:30 a.m. and 11:00 a.m.
Please indicate your interest by completing the attached form and returning it to the church office:

We have an opportunity to participate with Idlewylde UMC (Baltimore) and St John's UMC (Lutherville) in a VIM project at Red Bird Mission Work Camp in Kentucky Sept 26 – Oct 2. The project would involve construction type of work in the Appalachian area of Kentucky. Cost of participation is estimated at $350 per person.
St John's is hosting an information meeting concerning the project on Sunday, Apr 25th at 6:00 PM. I plan to attend the meeting and will provide any further information I get on the project. At the meeting, I would like to be able to indicate NBUMC interest in terms of a ballpark number of folks from NBUMC who might want to participate.
If you think this is something you might have an interest in being a part of, please let me know within the next couple of weeks. You can either call me (home 410-969-8640, cell 410-227-8469) or drop me an email (dougwall1@comcast.net). Any interested person is also welcome to attend the meeting on the 25th. To get an overview of the Red Bird Mission, go to their website www.rdmission.org and follow the links to the work camp section.
Feel free to share this with anyone that you know might have an interest. Remember, this is open to everyone, both men and women!

Nichols-Bethel UMC is now providing another opportunity to enrich your spiritual life. We are launching an online bible study for all ages (adults and youth) that will relate current events to biblical principles. The content is provided by Wired Word via subscription. You can show up and just listen (read) if that's your comfort level, but we really hope to develop a robust dialogue.
Dialogue? On a website? Yep. Participants have the opportunity to comment on each lesson. Additionally, the comments are threaded, or nested. That means that you can comment on a comment (up to 5 levels deep). The best part is that you can log in from anywhere that you have internet access; any time: day or night.
For privacy and copyright reasons, you must be logged in to see the bible study materials and comments.
Since registration to the website is moderated, you won’t get your password immediately upon entering your information
To login: In the upper-right-hand corner of every page on the site, you will see a "Log in" link. Click there & enter your username and password on the login page. You will then return to the home page.
If you are not logged in, you will only see a description of the course, not the course materials or comments. Once you are logged in, you should see your name at the top of the web page and more importantly, you’ll be able to see the course content and comments
Does your child love to sing? If you celebrated Vacation Bible School with us, you saw how much fun and instructional singing can be.
Beginning Wednesday, September 3, Children’s Choir Class will provide an opportunity for all children, ages 4-10, to participate, weekly, in a singing and learning “hands-on” experience. Children will be celebrating their faith through Bible story, song and related activities—movement, art work, rhythm instruments, etc.—all connected to biblical themes.
Children will provide music for worship once monthly, plus additional times related to the church year. Children’s Handbells will also restart, with the same purpose of enriching the child’s faith experience. An organizational meeting will begin at 5:00 p.m., on Wednesday, September 3, in Sunday School room 208. Parents will register their child for Primary Choristers (ages 4, 5 and 6) or Junior Choristers (ages 7-10), at which time we will discuss a rehearsal time most convenient for all. This is a FREE, on-going program, as a ministry of Nichols-Bethel UMC, so invite your friends and neighbors to come. Let’s celebrate our love for God, through music!
If you wish to pre-register, please fill out this form and place in Rev. Linda’s mailbox or the church office. Hope to see you soon!
