Wired Word – Stampeding Shoppers Trample Store Worker to Death

The Friday after Thanksgiving is generally the biggest shopping day of the year, and many retailers capitalize on that trend by announcing limited-time sales beginning in the wee hours of that morning. The day is referred to as "Black Friday," because the massive amount of shopping that occurs on that day often enables retailers to turn a profit and get into the "black." This year's Black Friday, however, will be remembered more for a fatality.

At a Wal-Mart in Valley Stream, New York, the crowd of more than 2,000 that had gathered for a 5 a.m. opening, began pressing against the sliding-glass double doors, which, at 4:55 a.m. gave way from the weight. As the shrieking mob surged into the store, temporary Wal-Mart employee Jdimytai Damour, 34, tried along with a few others to hold the crowd back. In the human stampede, however, Damour, was pushed onto the floor and trampled. His resulting injuries were grave, and despite efforts by emergency workers to save him, he was pronounced dead an hour later at a local hospital.
